Confessions of a Day Hiker

Sorry, but sleeping in a tent just ain’t my thing. And neither is sharing bathrooms and showers with strangers. One pubic hair and I’m pretty much done. 😉

Don’t get me wrong: I take no issue with getting dirty and stinky. I’ve been bloody and broken on hiking trails. But I really like having a bathtub at the end of the day.

Furthermore, it kinda throws me for a loop when people tell me that the best hikes are the ones that I have to wear a fifty pound pack on my back and hike for twelve days to get the best views. I don’t buy it. I’ve had some pretty damn good views hiking my way, as a day hiker. Here are some of my favorites:

Clouds Rest, Yosemite National Park. 14.5 miles, 1,775 gain, 9,926 feet at the top. Stunning views, wildflowers. Higher and easier than Half Dome, and a lot less people. No permit needed.

Druid Arch, Canyonlands National Park, Needles District. 10.4 miles, 1,633 gain. Elephant Hill trail head. Had the trail to myself. National Geographic geology.

Tiri Tiri Matangi Island, New Zealand. A short cruise away from Auckland. Hike around the whole island on a trail that few people pay attention to. Most go to the island to bird watch, but once away from the unloading point, the island is jaw-dropping.

What are your favorite day hikes?

I’ll be back with more of mine next week!
